Certain circumstances will trigger a management code of Gynaecological Referral which requires a copy to be sent to the colposcopy clinic. These include; an abnormal Cytological Pattern (codes 4 5 6 or 7), three sequential borderline changes (code 8), or three sequential inadequate smears (code 1). If the patient requires a referral to colposcopy clinic it would usually be the GP’s responsibility to contact the patient to arrange an appointment on receipt of the report. However, many laboratories are adopting the policy of sending both copies of the report directly to the clinic, which will arrange an appointment time and then the GP’s copy will be forwarded to the GP with the appointment date, thus reducing waiting times
